They are simple, clear and easy to fill in for respondents. Nevertheless, mistakes are still being made in choosing them which we only realize when we see the results.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3674 aligncenter\" src=\"\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/dotazniky-530x203-compressor.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-en.survio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/dotazniky-530x203-compressor.png 530w, https:\/\/blog-en.survio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/dotazniky-530x203-compressor-300x115.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What are closed-ended questions?<\/h2>\n<p>We have already written about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.survio.com\/en\/blog\/question-types-1-closed-ended-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed-ended questions<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.survio.com\/en\/blog\/question-types-1-closed-ended-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the first part<\/a> of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.survio.com\/en\/blog\/question-types-1-closed-ended-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series devoted to the question types<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Let us just remind you that a closed-ended question is one in which all the answer options are already pre-set and the respondent cannot add another one. There are several types of closed-ended questions, let&#8217;s focus on the traditional two of them: <strong>selective<\/strong> and <strong>enumerated<\/strong>. Let&#8217;s see an example.<\/p>\n<p>We will use both the selective and enumerated questions for the following query:<\/p>\n<p><em>What is your favourite season?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the picture, you can see that the question is exactly the same, but in the first case it is a selective question, in the latter case an enumerated question.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3703 size-full\" src=\"\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Frame-1.png\" alt=\"closed-ended questions\" width=\"703\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-en.survio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Frame-1.png 703w, https:\/\/blog-en.survio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Frame-1-300x307.png 300w, https:\/\/blog-en.survio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Frame-1-530x543.png 530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 703px) 100vw, 703px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Both questions look the same. They may only differ in their <strong>help text<\/strong>. But in the first example, the respondent can only choose one of the variants. In the latter case, he can choose all of them.<\/p>\n<p>In the latter example, many respondents are likely to choose only one of the answers, but there will still be some that check more or even all of them. This may be because they like all seasons equally. But it is clear from the nature of the question that you want the respondent to choose only one option, because there is a <strong>superlative<\/strong> used in the question &#8211; <strong>favourite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>What will the results look like?<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s say that we\u2019ve sent the survey to two groups of respondents and in both cases, 200 people have completed it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3684 aligncenter\" src=\"\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/respondents-compressor.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-en.survio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/respondents-compressor.png 663w, https:\/\/blog-en.survio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/respondents-compressor-300x121.png 300w, https:\/\/blog-en.survio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/respondents-compressor-530x213.png 530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Selective question<\/h3>\n<p>In case of using a selective question, the representation of data is very simple, because the sum of the answers is equal to the number of respondents. We can also take full advantage of the potential for relative expression (&#8220;<em>percentage<\/em>&#8220;) because the sum of all shares (&#8220;<em>percent<\/em>&#8220;) of each season will be equal to 100%.<\/p>\n<p>We can easily use any type of diagram to display the results, including a pie chart. Therefore, it is definitely not possible to use a pie chart. A possible alternative is not calculating the share of the number of respondents but of the total number of answers. However, in this case, we are already looking at completely different information.<\/p>\n<p>Another significant disadvantage of the enumerated question is that you cannot use it in a contingency table. This will deprive you of using the possibility of evaluating the relationships between the individual variables (e.g. calculating the dependence). Although we can get a chart of multiple answers that looks similar, the total sums will not make sense as the number of respondents will still remain 200, while the number of answers is 340.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, though,<strong> definitely do not reject the enumerated question<\/strong> either. Just make sure to use it when you really expect more answers to your question.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that if you are going to ask questions, first, try to think about what information you want to get from the questionnaire and what questions to choose to get that information.<\/p>\n<p>Use a basic rule when deciding about using closed-ended questions. The condition is that the values must be equal to 100% of the total sum of shares. It\u2019s alternatively called circle chart. It is not possible to use it for enumerated types of questions.<\/li>\n<li>Bar chart \u2013 a graph showing data in relative or absolute values.
