Care homes and assisted living. Run it once or twice a year, with someone available to help anyone who needs it.

Who answers

Residents themselves, in simple language, on paper or on a tablet. Eight short questions.

What you'll see

• Whether people feel respected, which is the question the whole survey exists for
• Whether they have somebody to talk to, and how many say no
• The staff, the room and the activities rated separately
• What residents would like changed, in their own words

How to get good answers

• Explain the anonymity out loud, not just in writing. Residents are describing people they depend on every day, and they need to hear that it is safe.
• Have someone neutral help with filling it in. A carer holding the pen changes every answer about carers.
• Keep the wording plain and the print large. Long sentences lose people long before difficult questions do.
• Tell residents afterwards what changed. In a care home a survey that leads to nothing does more damage than no survey at all.
