Biodegradation of Plastics in Museum Collections

My name is Elena Zaccagnini, I am currently studying conservation at the the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro in Rome (ISCR) and writing my dissertation thesis about the problems of conservation of the work Supercomponibili (1967) by italian artist Sergio Lombardo, an artwork made out of a urea-melamine formaldehyde resin.

I would be very interested in collecting some data from various museums, concerning the state of degradation of the materials of works of art. Of special importance, in regard to the specific subject of my research, are the data about the biodegradation phenomena inspected on various plastic artworks.

Data collection method

Which plastics are listed in the collection?

How many plastics of each type are present?

Have the plastic objects of the collection ever been chemically analysed?

Is any biodegradation phenomenon macroscopically visible on these artworks?

Where were these artworks stored?

Have the detected biological attacks been analysed to identify their biological agents?

Have they been treated with any specific product?

If treated with biocidal products, how were the results verified on artworks?

Were the applied biocidal products efficient against biodegradation?
