Bike-accessory research

Dear Sir / Madam,

As a fourth-year Industrial Design student in the Netherlands, I’m working on my graduation project. By answering the following questions, you can support me in the design process.

The survey contains 21 questions and takes around 5 minutes. To get a better picture of what products fall under the term “bike accessories”, question 3 gives a list of examples.

Thank you in advance.

1

Which bike accessory would you consider the most important? There are 100 points to distribute. Note that it is not needed for every accessory to have points.

If the function of your bike accessory is to “transport items", what weight do your carried products usually have?

6

If you could choose one accessory to place on the front of the bike, which accessory would it be? This can also be an accessory that is currently not placed on the front of bicycles.

Bike accessories can be interacted with during cycling if they are placed on the front. Is there a product you would like to use/have on the front?

Important information

The next questions are about the assembly and disassembly of your bike accessories. This simply refers to mounting (installing) and dismounting (taking apart) a bike accessory on/from your bike.

For example: the assembly of a water bottle holder, map holder, GPS holder. Note the water bottle, map or GPS itself can easily be taken out of their holders, in this case it's about the assembly of the holders themselves.

7

How often do you assemble and disassemble your bike accessories?

Note: please make sure you have read the above information, which explains what is exactly meant with assembly and disassembly of bike accessories.
8

What is the reason for the amount of times you assemble and disassemble your bike accessories?

9

Do you need tools for assembly/disassembly of the bike accessories?

10

Imagine being able to assemble/disassemble accessories 2-3x as quick and easy, for example: mounting your GPS-holder or water bottle holder in 2 minutes instead of 5 minutes. How much would this be worth to you?

What exactly is "quickly and easy"? In this situation it means noticeably quicker and easier then most current bike accessories. Example: less then 5 steps in the assembly/disassembly, just simple steps like positioning, clicking, etc.
11

Being able to assemble/disassemble your bike accessories without tools: how much would this be worth to you?

This is a specific question regarding the use of tools. People that like tools and don't mind using them might see little value in this, while people that avoid tools might see this option as something valuable.
12

You are choosing between two identical bikes, a normal one and a version of the bike where accessories can be assembled/disassembled twice very easily and quickly. Would you be willing to pay more for the second (special) variant of the bike?

13

How much more would you be willing to pay for the second (special) variant of the bike?

14

Situation: you have the special version of the bike. Would you change the amount of times you assemble/disassemble your bike accessories, or would you do it just as often?

Security

The next questions are about "permanently" attaching bike accessories to your bike. This means your accessories can't be simply taken (stolen) by somebody else. The accessory can only be taken of with the use of tools or keys.

15

Do you have the feeling your accessories need to be secured? If so, do you accept that there might be tools needed for the assembly/disassembly of the accessory?

By needing tools for assembly/disassembly some of the speed and simplicity would be lost, but it would still be a slightly better version of the usual assembly/disassembly proces.
16

How much value would "permanently" attaching a bike accessory have for you? (note: the text before question 16 explains what permanently means in this case)

0
No value
A lot of value
17

There are multiple options for adding "permanent" attachments (security). Which situation would you prefer between the following:

18

See below a short list of bike accessories. How much time would you find acceptable for assembly/disassembly for each group of products?

The final questions are about yourself.
