Lymphedema type

- Primary lymphedema results from developmental issues within the lymphatic system, often due to genetic factors. - Secondary lymphedema arises from damage or obstruction of a previously healthy lymphatic system, commonly caused by cancer treatment, surgery, or infection.

Stage 0:

Sub-clinical stage, abnormal flow in lymphatic system with possible pain, heaviness, or pain without signs of swelling

Stage 1:

Intermittent swelling that resolves with elevation, pitting edema when swollen

Stage 2:

Permanent swelling, skin changes including fibrosis

Stage 3:

Significant and non-reducible swelling, onset of elephantiasis and thick skin with hyper pigmentation and papilloma formations
