Dear Sir or Madam,

Balcombe Village Gateways Survey

Balcombe Parish Council is considering installing ‘Village Gateways’ at the Haywards Heath Road south entrance to Balcombe. Their aim is to slow vehicles as they enter the village.

Before we go any further, we would like to know if residents are in favour of the scheme.

What do gateways look like?

These are fairly common now, for example Ardingly and Lindfield have them and other villages are planning to install them. They are made of a durable plastic which gives a convincing wood effect.

The current plan would include the village name on the sign to confirm traffic is entering a village with some additional white posts on the left-hand verge.

The final design has not yet been decided.

We have outline agreement from WSCC for the installation, subject to a positive response from a public consultation.

You can view the company brochure by going to the following website link:

Where would they be located?

South of the village on the Haywards Heath Road where the 30mph and village signs are presently (see picture below). These will remain in place. We have also spoken with WSCC regarding the need to maintain the rumble strip.

What are the advantages?

According to West Sussex County Council, these gateways have a marked impact on driver behaviour and safety. Apparently, by designating a change of landscape i.e. from an open road to a more built up area, drivers are more prepared to reduce speed.

What are the downsides?

The gateways are clearly artificial and sometimes viewed as pretentious. They will also need cleaning to avoid projecting an uncared-for image of the village.

Are they expensive?

The main cost is the installation, as we must use WSCC approved contractors. Initial estimates are around £2k altogether, but the final cost and timing will be confirmed in Council Minutes should residents approve this proposal.

Funding comes from Section106 money levied on the developers of the Barnfield site.

Please complete the survey below to let the Parish Council know if you support this proposal.

Closing date for the survey is Friday 10th December 2021.
