Support for neurotypical siblings of autistic children

Hello!

As part of my bachelor's thesis, I am developing and designing a toolkit to promote the self-efficacy and resilience of neurotypical siblings of autistic children.

The aim of this survey is to gain insights into the specific needs and challenges of these siblings, suitable support measures and good practice examples.

Explanation of the term neurotypical: Neologism for neurologically typical; describes people whose neurological development and status corresponds to what most people consider normal in terms of language abilities and social skills.

I would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to share your views on this topic with me. Thank you very much!

The survey is anonymous. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me: marina.landerer@web.de

Thank you very much, Marina Landerer

Support for neurotypical siblings of autistic children

To make the survey as simple as possible, it is based on a specific use case.

Imagine that 6-year-old Anna has an 8-year-old brother, Max. Max has recently been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, since then the parents' attention has mainly been focused on Max and everyday life is structured according to his needs. Anna sometimes still doesn't understand why Max behaves the way he does and doesn't know how to deal with his behavior. She also sometimes feels neglected, as Max takes up a lot of her parents' time and attention. Anna often has to adapt and step back. Their parents realize that Anna is often neglected and look for resources to help them consciously meet Anna's needs and spend time alone with her.

Questions are now asked in order to gain a better understanding of the general problem.

4

Put yourself in Anna's shoes. What are your needs?

5

What specific challenges does Anna face due to her brother's autism diagnosis?

6

What simple explanations or tips about autism could help Anna understand her brother better?

7

How can Anna's parents support her best and give her security?

A toolkit is to be developed and designed to meet Anna's needs and challenges. The toolkit is a collection of different elements and resources that support Anna in a playful and child-friendly way. Anna uses the toolkit together with her parents, giving her conscious attention and making her the focus of attention.

In the following, questions will be asked about what this toolkit could look like and what possible content there is.

8

What could a toolkit look like that helps Anna to recognize and express her feelings?

What resources and methods can help 6-7 year olds deal with their feelings?
9

How can Anna's parents make her feel that her feelings are taken seriously and that she doesn't have to step aside?

10

How should a toolkit be designed to encourage Anna to confidently develop her own way of dealing with the situation?

What approaches and methods can help her?
11

What could a toolkit look like that would help Anna become more resilient and stronger in dealing with the challenges resulting from her brother's diagnosis?

12

How can Anna's needs be placed at the center of attention?

Finally, questions will be asked about how this toolkit can be integrated into everyday life.

13

What types of resources and activities could be used for the toolkit to make it as easy as possible to integrate into everyday life?

14

How should a toolkit be designed that deliberately draws parents' attention to Anna, but doesn't take up too much time?

15

What should the toolkit contain and how should it be designed so that it can be used regularly and Anna doesn't get bored too quickly?

16

Which games/books does Anna often/prefer to use in everyday life at the age of 6-7?

Name games/books that you or your own children (or children you know) aged 6-7 years like to use or have used.
17

Here is space for further comments

18

Do you have a neurotypical child aged 6-7 and an autistic child or are you confronted with this in your everyday working life and would be willing to discuss it further with me?

Please leave your name and e-mail address here. Thank you very much!
