World designed for men

The survey will take about 10 minutes of your time.

For my project I am researching how everyday objects, technologies and experiences are designed for and by men.

Examples are smartphones that are too big for women's hands, seat belts that are designed for men's bodies, public toilets that do not take female needs into account, etc. I hope to collect many more examples like this by asking what you encounter or see happening around you.

Thanks for your time and cooperation!

I want to use this survey to collect qualitative* data about my chosen topic. this survey that I named 'World designed for men' aims to offer me new insights into objects and/or situations unconsciously designed by and for men without taking women into account.

*Quantitative research tries to uncover facts, often expressing the results in numbers. Qualitative research is more descriptive in nature and focuses on interpretations, experiences and meaning. Qualitative results are usually expressed in words.

First, a few general questions

1

What is your gender?

2

How do you identify?

3

Where are you from

(country)
4

What is your age?

For my research i explore how everyday objects, technologies, and experiences—from seat belts, to voice recognition software*, to public restrooms—are designed for, and by, men. I want to collect as many examples as possible and i hope too gather as much insights as possible.

*For example: voice recognition software often don't recognize women's voices because they are solely tested on men (and they often have lower voices)

5

Did you know that the majority of medicine are solely tested on men?

Select one answer

For several reasons, female subjects have historically been excluded from toxicology or biomedical research, says Tamarra James-Todd, an epidemiologist at Harvard Medical School. (Westervelt for The Guardian, 2017)

As i stated before a lot of objects, technologies, and experiences are designed with the idea that men/males are the standard. This can have huge disadvantages for women all over the world. Medicine can have very different effects on women's bodies because there are a lot of biological differences.

6

Have you ever experienced one or more of these things?

Select answers you have experienced

If you selected one or more answers chances are you're a woman.

I want to collect as many examples as possible. If you can think of any possible objects or situations where men have an advantage please state them in the question below.

Please don't hesitate to write down whatever you think of. I will research the answers on their reliability. Right now i just want to know what comes to mind.

7

Is there any example of an object or situation you think is designed for the male standard? Example: A big smartphone that don't fit well into women's hands.
