The Hortobágy Grassland in Eastern Hungary is the largest continuous area of natural grassland in Europe. The Hortobágy National Park, established in 1973, includes a large part of the Nagykunság region. Traditional livestock farming and grazing is practised in the area, and ancient Hungarian breeds of animals such as the grey cattle are kept. Because of the watercourses, stone bridges were built in the wilderness as early as the 13th century. Another typical building type of the Puszta is the csárda (=tavern), built in the 18th and 19th centuries. These inns usually consisted of two ground-floor buildings facing each other, which also contained taverns, guest rooms and stables. The national park ensures the preservation of the unique characteristics and traditions of the hamlet. Q: How many holes are there in the Hortobágy Bridge?

The Hortobágy National Park, which was included in 1999, is unique from both a natural and a cultural point of view: a) an outstanding example of special plant and animal species, of the coexistence of nature and man, of traditional land use over thousands of years, b) a repository of wilderness life, pastoral art and living traditions. The Hortobágy area is not just a world of endless wilderness. There are floodplain forests and marshes which, together with the wilderness, define the specific character of the region.
