Question type detail

An emoji question allows respondents to pick a single emoji from a set that represents different levels of sentiment or experience — for example, from a sad face to a happy face. It is ideal for capturing quick emotional responses with minimal cognitive load. The emoji question builder in Survio includes an AI assistant that helps you phrase the question, suggests suitable emoji options and offers alternative sets.

As every question type, it can be set as mandatory or optional to answer.

In question settings, you can set:

  • Number of emojis (from 2 - 5)

  • Emoji order ( positive -> negative or negative -> positive)

  • Emoji color ( Achromatic or green to red spectrum)

How to use it

  • Formulate a clear, emotion‑oriented question (e.g., “How satisfied were you with the customer support?”).

  • Select a set of emojis that represents the scale you need (commonly five faces ranging from very negative to very positive).

  • Arrange the emojis in logical order from negative to positive or vice versa.

Within the question settings, you can change the rating spectrum.

Satisfy -> Dissatisfy is a default measurement.

You can change the range to any negative to positive rating style

When to use it

  • Measuring overall satisfaction or mood after an interaction or service.

  • Gathering a quick pulse on how users feel about a product feature or event.

  • Replacing traditional rating scales when you want a friendly and visual touch.

How to evaluate

Emoji questions can be analyzed by assigning numerical values to each emoji (e.g., 1 for the saddest face up to 5 for the happiest face). Summary charts, such as bar or pie charts, visualize how many respondents selected each emoji.

Each question type has various options of graph interpretation in Survio analytics. Besides summary statistics via graphs, individual responses can be downloaded from the platform for further analysis.
